Home Medicating for Difficult Pets
Administering medication to pets can be a challenging experience, especially if they’re resistant or anxious. At Dr. Anita Vet to Pet, we specialise in providing expert assistance for pet owners facing difficulties with home medicating. Our goal is to ensure your furry family members receive the vital treatments they need, all while minimizing stress for both you and your pet.
Why Home Medicating Can Be Challenging
Many pets can be uncooperative when it comes to taking medications, whether they’re pills, liquids, or injections. Reasons for this resistance can include:
- Taste Aversion: Some pets have a strong dislike for the taste of certain medications.
- Stress and Anxiety: The process of medicating can cause stress, making pets less likely to cooperate.
- Physical Limitations: Older or ill pets may have difficulty swallowing pills or may require more complex dosing.
- Behavioural Issues: Some pets have ingrained behaviours that make medicating them difficult, related to previous traumas.
- Pure stubborness!
Our Expert Approach
1) Personalised Assessment: Dr. Anita will assess your pet’s specific needs and challenges. Understanding their unique behaviour and preferences allows us to tailor our approach effectively.
2) Techniques and Strategies: We employ various methods to make medicating easier, including:
- Positive Reinforcement: Using treats or praise to create a positive association with medication.
- Pill Pockets and Flavouring: We can recommend or provide options that disguise the taste of medications, making them more palatable.
- Specialised Equipment: For pets that require injections or specific dosing tools, we can guide you on the best equipment to use for safe and accurate administration.
- The use of transdermal medication that can be applied to the inner surface of an ear.
3) Hands-On Training: We’ll provide you with hands-on training during our visit, establishing if you feel confident in administering medications down the track. This includes demonstrations and practice sessions with Dr. Anita guiding you through the process.
4) Follow-Up Support: After your appointment, Dr. Anita remains available for any questions or concerns you may have as you begin the home medicating process. Our goal is to ensure that you feel supported every step of the way.
